Celebrate National Water Gardening Month

Did you know that July is National Water Gardening Month? What a better time to enjoy your watery paradise than the beginning of summer! And if you’ve yet to take the plunge into the wonderful world of water gardening, this is also a great time to consider if this will be the year for you. Believe it or not, July is a time when I start thinking about my pond in the fall. I do a lot of research on the best plants and leaf colors for one of my favorite times of the year. This might be a good time for you to start thinking about it too. Your local garden center certainly has thought of it. You’ll see some great fall shrubs and late blooming plants ready for you to take home and plant. But don’t get too overzealous with your planting as it’s still hot out there!

The Present

When I’m not thinking about the future of my pond, I’m busy planning parties around my pond. Sometimes I don’t even have to be the one initiating the party. My friends will actually call and suggest a bonfire and party by the pond because they’d like some quality time with my fish, I don’t blame them because I’d be dying to spend some time by a pond if I didn’t already have one. That’s not to say that I don’t hang out by my pond all the time. One of my favorite things about summer is the longer days we experience because that means more time by my pond.
I spend a lot of time grilling in the summer. Hamburgers, hot dogs, steak, chicken, and (when my finned friends aren’t looking) fish. Being able to grill out and enjoy a meal by my pond is unbelievable. If your family is like our family, the song “Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer” by Nat King Cole doesn’t really apply. Well the crazy part does as our schedule is jam-packed with events, parties, and games. That’s why the pond is so important – it allows everyone the chance to get together and eat without a television blaring the latest news. It’s a time to talk and connect with each other. Could all of this happen without a pond? Probably. Could it happen as frequently as it does? Probably not.

My Work, My Hobby

How many people do you know who bring their jobs home with them every night? Well, now you know one more. Luckily, this doesn’t hinder my family life … it enriches it. Being able to create gorgeous ponds every day and coming home to my own at night is very rewarding. I actually enjoy pruning my water lilies and tending to my marginals after a hard day of work. It’s a great job and an even better hobby. Now I may not be able to make you love your job, but I can introduce you the best hobby in the world. And maybe when you get home, you’ll decide to ditch the work and grill out by the pond with your family. Think about it.
