Did you know that July is National Water Gardening Month? What a better time to enjoy your watery paradise than the beginning of summer! And if you’ve yet to take the plunge into the wonderful world of water gardening, this is also a great time to consider if this will be the year for you. Believe it or not, July is a time when I start thinking about my pond in the fall. I do a lot of research on the best plants and leaf colors for one of my favorite times of the year. This might be a good time for you to start thinking about it too. Your local garden center certainly has thought of it. You’ll see some great fall shrubs and late blooming plants ready for you to take home and plant. But don’t get too overzealous with your planting as it’s still hot out there!
Following are some common myths and the modern facts that have pushed them aside.
Myth: Any contractor or landscaper can build a water garden.
Fact: Building a pond and building it right are two different things. Building ecosystem ponds is a relatively new specialty. A good landscaper isn’t necessarily knowledgeable in the concept, design or construction that makes an organic water garden system work. Also, much of the literature and information still in circulation does not relate to ecosystem water gardening. I have been installing ponds for over 19 years and am continuously attending classes and seminars to stay on the cutting edge of new techniques and information pertaining to water gardens so that I may provide my clients with the highest level of service. For me this is more then just another way to increase company profits, it is a passion. I hope you allow me to use my knowledge and creative artistry to bring you a beautiful water garden so that you may share in the joy of water gardening.
I know it sounds like an oxymoron, but believe it or not, there is such a thing as a low maintenance water garden. When you think of a pond, also known as a water garden, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the usual concrete or plastic tubs that were so prevalent in the marketplace for years. Homeowners usually ended up with what looked like a bowl of pea soup, with pumps and plumbing in plain sight, rather than the beautiful back yard oasis that they originally had in mind. The hours of weekly maintenance did not translate into the relaxing, holistic experience that they had longed for, thus turning what should have been a stress reliever into the headache that they wish they no longer had.
